Spain and Portugal  travel to Stadion Wankdorf for a 20:00 kick off in their opening game of the 2025 Women’s Euro tournament as Spain aim to add a European Championship win onto their current World Cup title.

Last time at the UEFA Women’s EURO tournament:

SPAIN

Despite successfully advancing from the group stage as runners-up, behind Germany , Spain failed to make it further than the quarter-final stage.

Placed in a group alongside Finland, Germany, and Denmark, it looked certain that if they played like they had during qualification, they would easily see themselves into the knockout phase.

Spain’s opening match was against Finland, where they managed to secure a 4-1 win.

However, when up against Germany, the Spanish side suffered a 2-0 defeat, forcing them to drop three points.

Spain’s final challenge was against Denmark, where Spain managed to scrape a late 1-0 win, following a goal from Marta Cardona in the 90th minute.

Their progression saw them face England in a quarter-final tie where, despite taking an early lead, they bowed out of the tournament as they suffered a 2-1 defeat.

PORTUGAL

After qualifying for the 2022 tournament, through the play-offs, advancement to the knockout phase looked doubtful for the Portuguese side, who were set to face a difficult Group C.

Group C saw host to Portugal, Sweden, Netherlands and Switzerland.

Portugal’s opening match against Switzerland saw Portugal gain one point following a 2-2 draw, despite Switzerland’s early lead Portugal managed to regain control and put the two teams level.

Portugal then went on to play the Netherlands and Sweden and despite their efforts to gain points, Portugal failed to find success in both games.

Portugal exited bottom of the group alongside Switzerland, after both teams only managed to gain one point.

Previous Meetings:

Despite the neighbouring counties meeting each other for six previous competitive matches, Portugal are yet to beat Spain.

Their latest meeting occurred earlier this year, in April, when Spain secured a 7-1 success in the UEFA Women’s Nations League.

Where to Watch:

The match is set to be played at the Stadion Wankdorf at 20:00 BST (21:00 CET) on Thursday, July 3rd, and can be streamed in the UK on ITV.

What’s next for the two teams?:

Spain’s next game is set to be played against Belgium at Arena Thun on Monday, July 7th, at 17:00 BST.

Portugal are then set to face Italy, on the same day, at Stade de Genève in Geneva for a 20:00 BST kick-off.
