Player Profile: Sophie Baggaley

Sophie Baggaley is English Football Player who is an essential player who plays as a goalkeeper for Brighton in the Womens Super League, having joined the side in September 2023. 


Before joining Brighton Baggaley has played for Birmingham City, Bristol City and Manchester United. 


Baggaley grew up in Derbyshire, and became a goalkeeper unexpectedly through volunteering for the position in a boys’ team for a game.  


She came through the Derby centre of excellence. 


Yet she then joined Birmingham City academy at the age of 17 in June 2013. 


Club career: 


Baggaley joined Birmingham City academy and was promoted to the senior team in 2014 as a backup for the now Tottenham goalkeeper Spencer. 


She then went on to make her debut for the club in May 2014, yet in 2016 the arrival of Berger meant Baggaley was unable to be the starting keeper. 


Baggaley joined Bristol city on a season long loan ahead of the 17/18 season, rewardingly she won the FA women's football awards, and was named in the PFA team of the year having started 17 out of 18 matches. 


Also winning The FA Women's football awards for save of the year for her save against Arsenal. 


She then went on to join Bristol city permanently in 2018, for the next two seasons Baggaley was a key player for Brighton providing many saves. 


Baggaley ended her time at Bristol in the summer of 2021 as they were relegated to the Championship, so she put pen to paper and joined Manchester United on a two year contract. 


Baggaley made her club debut in October 2021 when the club faced Championship side Durham as Manchester United went on to win the game through penalties in 21/22 league cup. 


Yet Baggaley decided to part ways with club as she signed a deal with Brighton in September 2023. 


She has now gone on to be a starting keeper for the club as she continues to play for them as the 24/25 season is underway. 


International career: 


Baggaley has represented England at youth level, she has played for the England team in every age group up to the under 23’s. 


In 2016 Baggaley was called up to the senior squad but was an unused substitute, she was also recalled in 2017 but was once again not played.
