Manchester United vs Aston Villa

In the final game of this weekend’s Women’s Super League games, Manchester United hosted Aston Villa at Leigh Sports Village.


The final score was 0-0 after an impressive first half showing from Aston Villa however both sides had their chances.


Ahead of this game, Manchester United had won three of their games and drawn two of them.


Their most recent game took place last weekend where they faced Arsenal at Leigh Sports Village and drew 1-1.


For Aston Villa, Their start to the season has not gone as they would have hoped. Going into this game, Aston Villa had lost four games and drawn two. 

 

First half: 


The game kicked off and Aston Villa immediately started with intention to cause Manchester United problems.


Tullis-Joyce was almost immediately called into action with chances flying in from Aston Villa. 


Nobbs had a great opportunity to score after some excellent work from Hanson, however Nobbs’ effort was saved by Tullis-Joyce.


Gabby George made a great recovery after Grant was heading through on goal for Aston Villa towards the end of the first half. 


Nunes almost put the visitors ahead after Grant crossed an excellent ball into the box. Aston Villa’s Gabi Nunes flicked the ball in an attempt to find the back of the net, however this was claimed by Tullis-Joyce.


In a half which proved little chances for United, Terland seemed a bright spark for the home side. 


The away side dominated the half with possession and great opportunities from nunes and Nobbs, United struggled to create any real opportunities and Aston Villa were unlucky to not score.


Half time 0-0


Second half:


Terland again started this half well, United finding their feet in the game and Grace Clinton took a shot from range. 


Janssen and Daly battled against each other and both found themselves in the referee’s book after fouls on each other. 


Lucy Parker had an outstanding first half and really proved herself however, unfortunately she picked up an injury in the second half. This forced her to be substituted and she was replaced by Tomas.


Manchester United looked to their bench and Geyse replaced Malard towards the 70th minute. 


Throughout the second half, the game was fairly even. Manchester United had definitely improved from the first half and had more chances towards goal. 


In the aim of finding a goal, Manchester United and Aston Villa both made triple changes. Manchester United introduced Williams, Mannion and Awujo and Aston Villa brought Leon, Robinson and Dali onto the pitch.


Williams headed forward, showing her impact instantly, however Patten and D’angelo did well to keep their clean sheet.


In the 90th minute, Katie Robinson almost got the winner for the away side but George once again, provided an excellent moment of defence.


In a game which almost seemed destined for there to be a breakthrough goal, there was ten minutes of additional time.


Jordan Nobbs who played excellently in the first half was replaced by Miri Taylor in the 93rd minute of the game.


The additional ten minutes were intense and there were moments were it seemed inevitable that the ball would find the back of the net.

Manchester United next face Leicester away and Aston Villa host Crystal Palace.
